Most fiber optic connectors are plug or male connectors that have a protruding ring that grips the fibers and aligns the fibers for mating. They use a mating adapter (bayonet, screw-in, or snap-on) to match two connector heights that match the connectors' safety mechanism. The ferrule design is also useful as it can be used to directly connect to active devices such as LEDs.
